Charlotte Clews is a nature-nerd, long distance trail runner, triathlete, artist and mother teaching Pilates and Functional Core Movement in Downeast, Maine.
I teach movement of many kinds but in all cases I aim to help you establish (or re-establish) a respectful conversation with your body that will help you feel more at home in your body and more free in the world.
My classes are instructive and upbeat. Connecting breath and movement, the pace is slow enough to pay attention and cultivate good postural alignment and function, but fast enough to cover a full-spectrum of actions in each class. All of my classes integrate the most modern understandings of therapeutic alignment, breath and movement to help you build a strong, resilient, happy body and mind.
Yoga I started practicing Ashtanga yoga in 1993 and began teaching in 1998. I completed my first teacher training with Richard Freeman in 2000 and another with David Swenson soon after. By 2004 I switched my practice from Ashtanga to Anusara and started studying full-time with John Friend, the founder of Anusara Yoga and became Maine’s first certified Anusara Yoga Teacher in 2010. I resigned my license with Anusara in April 2012.
Pilates I completed my Beginner Pilates Mat training course in April, 2014, my Intermediate Mat training course in 2016 and my 600-hr Comprehensive Pilates Training in October 2018. I am trained through Power Pilates in the classical style and my primary teachers are Kim Casto and Cheryl Turnquist.
TRX I completed my TRX group class training in October 2015.
For the last few years I have been working on a more integrated form of functional fitness that addresses the most common misalignments, injuries and limitations of not only yoga practitioners, but runners, athletes and office workers as well. Using a variety of exercises from modern yoga practices (particularly Anusara and Iyengar), Pilates and physical therapy I help students wake up their intrinsic core muscles to support comfortable, healthy posture and movement.
In the last 20 years, I have accrued thousands of hours of teacher training in therapeutic alignment and movement. I’m a certified teacher trainer and regularly teach teachers, including 200 and 500-hr level Yoga Teacher Trainings.
